Writing for answer engines5 min read

Make every page quotable

The sentence-level habits — definitions, short paragraphs, citations — that turn ordinary copy into AI-friendly source material.

Lead with a definition

The first sentence under any heading should be a one-line, self-contained statement of fact. 'A wool overcoat is a knee-length winter coat made from compressed wool fibers.' That's a quotable sentence. 'Looking for the perfect coat?' is not.

Short paragraphs, real lists

Two to four sentences per paragraph. Bullet lists for anything enumerable. Engines extract list items as ready-made answer fragments. Walls of text get summarized away — and the summary won't mention you.

Cite your sources

Link out to primary sources (research, official docs, manufacturer specs). It seems counterintuitive — why send traffic away? — but outbound citations are one of the strongest credibility signals to AI engines, and pages that cite well tend to get cited back.
